ANBUG Newsletter - 2006/2
6th June 2006
ANBUG held a committee meeting on May 25. A few points arose that
may be of general interest to Australian neutron users.
AINSE/ANBUG neutron scattering symposium (AANSS):
The 2006 symposium, including a visit to the OPAL complex, will
be held in the AINSE auditorium at Lucas Heights from 11-13 December.
The Bragg Institute has advised that the Summer School intended
for 13-15 December will be postponed until mid-2007; this will allow
better scope for 'hands-on' experience at OPAL.
Elections; AGM: This is a reminder that nominations
(via email) and elections (via www) will be held later this year.
This will allow the new committee to be established following the
AGM which will be held in December during AANSS2006. Full details
will be provided in due course but please give some thought about
possible involvement on the ANBUG Executive Committee or nominating
whom you would like to see in these elected positions.
OPAL Proposals: A new online proposal system will
go live later this year, to accept proposals for OPAL experiments
in the first half of 2007. These proposals will no longer be assessed
by the AINSE Materials Structure and Dynamics Committee; rather,
their scientific merit will be reviewed by international experts
and ultimately assessed by a panel convened directly by the Bragg
Institute. This reflects the part of the new MOU between ANSTO and
AINSE where there will be no charge for neutron beam access to OPAL.
Lucas Heights Motel (Stevens Hall): The upgrade
is now complete. Note also that AINSE has cars available for users
to take off-site.
NCRIS (National
Collaborative Infrastructure Strategy) - Characterisation:
We encourage you to participate in the NCRIS processes and workshops
which are being held throughout the country during June. The Characterisation
Capability (5.3) covers Advanced Microscopy and Microanalysis, X-Ray
Techniques (including Synchrotron radiation) and Neutron Scattering.
There are significant funds potentially available in Characterisation.
Among the options for neutrons include improvements to the OPAL
reactor and its instrumentation and a National Deuteration Facility
for deuterated biomolecules, surfactants and so on. The committee
urges you to support these neutron activities.
Joint capability workshops for the Characterisation Capability
are being held in the capital cities with the following tentative
