ANBUG News
ANBUG Newsletter - 2006/3
18th August 2006
There is a lot happening in the neutron science scene in Australia
- from the onset of OPAL (the reactor achieved criticality on 12
August) and the outcome of NCRIS deliberations to the forthcoming
AINSE-ANBUG Neutron Scattering Symposium in December.
Below are a few of the main points discussed at the ANBUG Executive
meeting of 10/08/06.
Website - the ANBUG website www.anbug.org has
been revised by Stewart Campbell and Jamie Schulz with changes implemented
and updated by Jamie – please check our website regularly.
AANSS2006 - Organisation of the AINSE-ANBUG Neutron
Scattering Symposium (11-13 December 2006) is progressing well.
ANBUG will contribute $1500 to the AANSS2006 Symposium to assist
with student costs. These funds will be returned to ANBUG in the
(expected) event that they are not spent by AANSS2006.
Elections for the new ANBUG Committee (2007-2008)
- will be held soon with the AGM to be held on 11 December during
AANSS2006. Separate announcements will be made shortly.
ANSTO User Program - There will be a gap in the
availability of neutrons to the Australian scattering community
between the shutdown in HIFAR (expected end December 2006) and the
opening of OPAL to regular user proposals (beginning April 2007
for the initial instruments). Feedback suggests that the neutron
community more or less accepts the need for this gap.
ANBUG Representation on BIAG - At present the
ANBUG president is a member of BIAG, the Beam Instrument Advisory
Committee. With the advent of OPAL and the end of BIAG from February
2007, the ANBUG president will automatically be a member of the
new ANSTO Proposal Advisory Committee (PAC). OPAL will begin accepting
regular user proposals in the first half of 2007. As the name suggests,
the PAC will be an advisory committee as well as carrying out editorial
duties for proposals.
NCRIS - ANBUG submitted a response to the Planning
Update Document on Characterisation as prepared by the Facilitator
Professor Simon Ringer. The response was generally in support of
scenario 2 as outlined in the Document. NCRIS has announced its
budgetary deliberations for Characterisation and ANBUG now has the
opportunity to respond to these budgetary deliberations.
ANBUG Awards - Stewart Campbell proposed the introduction
of ANBUG Awards to Neutron Science, similar to those offered by
other national neutron societies. The committee accepted the proposed
award conditions which will be announced shortly to the community.
The closing date for nominations will be 1 October 2006; the awards
will be presented at AANSS2006 in December.
Kind regards,
Stewart Campbell, President ANBUG
Chris Ling, Minutes Secretary ANBUG
