ANBUG News
ANBUG Newsletter - 2007/1
ANBUG held a committee meeting on Thursday 15th May 2007. A few
points arose that may be of general interest to Australian neutron
users.
ANBUG Awards: ANBUG will be awarding two medals
at AANSS2007.
- ANBUG Award for outstanding research in neutron science and
leadership promoting the Australian neutron scattering community
- ANBUG Award for sustained contribution to a scientific subfield,
or subfields, using neutron scattering techniques.
International Neutron Scattering Conference (ICNS2005)
Profit: ANBUG will receive $75,000 of the profit made from
the ICNS2005 that was held in Sydney in 2005. It was decided that
the money be placed in a fixed term deposit with the interest derived
from the fixed term deposit to be used to support the attendance
of students and early career researchers at international conferences.
The details of the including terms and conditions will be posted
on the ANBUG website shortly.
ANBUG @ OPAL Opening: ANBUG represented the Australian
neutron scattering community at the OPAL opening. An ANBUG fact-sheet
was prepared for the opening and was well received by the participants
and the Official and the Science & Business Openings. See the
new ANSTO website for full details (http://www.ansto.gov.au/)
AINSE/ANBUG neutron scattering symposium (AANSS):
The 2007 symposium will be held in the AINSE auditorium at Lucas
Heights from 5-7 December. The symposium will be preceded by a Neutron
Scattering Summer School on Diffraction with 'hands-on' experience
using the neutron beam instruments at OPAL.
Proposed Asia-Pacific Neutron Scattering Association:
It was proposed at ICNS that a Asia-Pacific Neutron Scattering Association
be formed. Discussions have been continuing between the various
Asia-Pacific neutron scattering societies regarding the proposed
association. Some of the proposed activities of the association
would include joint neutron scattering schools and conferences rotating
between Australia, Korea and Japan. More information to follow…
NCRIS (National Collaborative Infrastructure Strategy)
- Characterisation: The Minister for Education, Science
and Training, The Hon Julie Bishop MP announced that the Australian
Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will receive
$3.3 million to establish the National Deuteration Facility at its
Lucas Heights site near Sydney. ANBUG has recently provided a submission
relating to the NCRIS Characterisation Council which will assist
in coordinating implementation of the characterisation investments.
OPAL Neutron Beam Instrument Update: Wombat and
Echidna are well into hot commissioning and installation is progressing
well on the remaining suite of instruments. ANSTO will be submitting
requests for operating licences from ARPANSA for Wombat and Echidna
shortly. ANSTO is also happy to report that the cold source is operating
reliably.
